Dedicated Material Solutions for New Energy Vehicles

What NEVs bring to the additives industry isa set of entirely new material demands, not just "cars with a new badge". Battery packs, high-voltage harnesses, rooftop PV and charging interfaces do not exist on conventional vehicles, and the combination of weather-resistance, flame-retardancy and thermal-stability demands is entirely different.

NEV interior
NEV interior parts are governed by VOC, odor and fogging regulations on top of weather resistance

I. Material changes driven by GB 38031-2025

The new standard is mandatory and took effect on July 1, 2026
GB 38031-2025 "Safety Requirements for Power Batteries of Electric Vehicles"raises the thermal-propagation requirement from "alarm within 5 minutes" to"no fire, no explosion, and no harmful smoke for occupants within a 2-hour observation period"; it also addsbottom impact (30 mm steel ball, 150 J, 3 strikes) andexternal short circuit after 300 fast-charge cyclestesting. The requirement is stricter than UN R100 and the US FMVSS 305a, and directly raises the bar for flame retardancy and long-term thermal stability of battery-pack housings and module brackets.

1.1 Battery-pack housing and structural parts

PartMaterial directionKey requirementsTiangang solution
Battery tray / underbody shieldLong-glass-fiber reinforced flame-retardant PP
(LGF-PP + halogen-free FR, density approx. 1.2 g/cm3)
UL94 V-0 (1.5 mm); high modulus;long-term thermal stability + outdoor weather resistanceFR-810A (flame retardancy + weather resistance, three-in-one) or XT-8 + antioxidant
Module bracket / connector housingGlass-fiber reinforced halogen-free FR PA6 / PA66V-0 (0.8-1.5 mm); service temperature above 120°CN-OR systems tolerate acidic decomposition products;AO-168 improves processing and long-term thermal stability
High-voltage connectorFlame-retardant + hydrolysis-resistant PBT / PPATracking resistance (CTI); hydrolysis resistance; flame retardancyLow-alkalinity NOR systems avoid conflict with acidic flame-retardant by-products
Battery top coverSMC + mica + intumescent FR coating, or thermoplastic FR PAFlame retardancy + heat resistance + electrical insulationCan be co-designed with the flame-retardant system
The core tension here remains
Battery-pack housings must be bothhalogen-free flame-retardant andweather-resistant over long-term outdoor service. Intumescent FR systems (APP / MCA) are themselves acidic; they neutralize conventional alkaline HALS and deactivate them -this is the clearest fit for N-OR chemistry (XT-8 / FR-810A). Seen another way: conventional alkaline HALS here are not merely "slightly less effective" - they gradually lose function over time, which is an unacceptable risk.

1.2 Rooftop PV

Encapsulant filmTransmittanceService lifeNotes
ETFE90–95%25-35 yearsMainstream today; service range -200 to 150°C; self-cleaning
PVDF88–91%About 20 yearsLower fluorine content than ETFE; delamination risk under long-term UV
PETAbout 1/5 the cost of ETFE3-5 yearsPronounced yellowing and hydrolysis; cannot support a 25-year rooftop warranty

ETFE / PVDF are inherently weather-resistant; UV shielding is carried mainly by the base resin, so additive demand is low. Butthe frames, backsheets and adhesive seals of rooftop PVstill need HALS together with UV absorbers to prevent yellowing and seal failure under long-term UV.

1.3 Charging interfaces and cables

Charging-gun housings commonly use PC, PBT and PA66-GF25; cable jackets mostly use TPE / TPU / PUR. Key metrics include:flame retardancy (UL94 V-0), -30 to +50°C service, UV weather resistance, over 10,000 mating cycles, IP55/IP65 protection, plus RoHS / REACH compliance. Because charging guns sit outdoors for long periods,UV stability and flame retardancy must be delivered together, so material selection favors solving both in one step rather than two separate additions.

1.4 Thermal-management lines

Cooling lines in NEVs commonly use PPS / PA12 three-layer tubing (inner PPS + adhesive layer + outer PA12), with service temperatures up to 130°C and low ion extraction required to protect the electrochemical system. Antioxidant systems are especially critical under this kind of sustained high temperature -AO-1010 + AO-168 is a common thermal-stability pairing, while the blended AO-B215 completes the primary + secondary antioxidant match in a single addition.
