Substances added to shield against or inhibit photo-oxidation or photo-ageing processes are called light stabilizers. Products such as coatings, plastics, rubber and synthetic fibers, when exposed to sunlight or strong fluorescent light (which contains more harmful ultraviolet rays than ordinary fluorescent lamps), undergo self-oxidation triggered by UV absorption, leading to polymer degradation and deterioration of the product's appearance.
