Light Stabilizers for Automotive TPO and PP in the U.S.

At the 2003 SPE Annual Polyolefins Conference in Houston, Cytec Industries (U.S.) introduced the fourth product in its Cyasorb IHT series of high-molecular-weight triazine polymeric hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS); Cytec first launched the series in 2001.
At the same dosage and similar cost, the new product Cyasorb THT 7001 offers 1–2 times higher UV protection than competing products. It is a 'coat'able, non-blooming HALS especially suited to automotive TPO (thermoplastic olefin) and PP copolymers; its features are no surface blooming (no migration) on parts, no reaction with acid coatings, and no interaction with halogenated flame retardants.
The SAE J1885 standard specifies UV irradiation energy of 1200 kJ for accelerated automotive weathering tests; according to Cytec, at UV irradiation energy as high as 10000 kJ, TPO with 0.15%–0.20% Cyasorb THT 7001 still showed very good UV protection.
