Introduction and Application Scope of Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers

With modern production processes and higher living standards, people's requirements for material performance are increasingly high. For example, in fields such as plastic products, coatings, and paints, not only must basic functional requirements be met, but also performance aspects such as weather resistance and gloss. Unfortunately, most materials are highly susceptible to the effects of light and thermal oxidation, and may experience fading, chalking, and cracking during long-term use. To address this problem, people have gradually adopted UV-blocking agents and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) as protective agents to safeguard material performance. This article will introduce the basic principles, classification, and industrial application scope of hindered amine light stabilizers.Introduction and Application Scope of Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers 配图

1. Basic Principles and Classification of Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers

As the name suggests, hindered amine light stabilizers use a dual UV-protection mechanism to protect materials from damage by ultraviolet light and other spectral regions, thereby protecting their appearance and performance. Their main mechanism of action includes two aspects: chemical and physical. The chemical aspect mainly refers to preventing photochemical reactions, thereby reducing the probability of UV damage. The physical aspect mainly refers to protecting the material by absorbing photons and exciting them from the ground state to an excited state.

According to differences in molecular structure and optical properties, hindered amine light stabilizers can be divided into several types, as described below:

(1) Light stabilizers containing amine groups. Their mechanism mainly eliminates free radicals or inhibits their generation through the strong reducing effect of the amine groups.

(2) Carbamate light stabilizers. Their mechanism mainly protects materials through infrared absorption and heat dissipation.

(3) Low-molecular-weight HALS. Their mechanism mainly protects materials through free-radical transfer and Lewis acid–Lewis base interactions.

(4) High-molecular-weight HALS. Their mechanism mainly protects polymer materials through redox reactions.

2. Application Scope of Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers in Industry

As people's requirements for material performance increase, hindered amine light stabilizers are being applied in more and more industrial fields, as described below:

(1) Plastic products field. With the widespread use of plastic products, they are prone to fading under outdoor exposure. Therefore, adding a small amount of HALS to plastic products can effectively avoid the risk of fading.

(2) Coatings and paints field. For the needs of outdoor buildings and sites, the coatings and paints field demands higher-quality appearance and adhesion. After adding hindered amine light stabilizers, not only can the original gloss be maintained, but the weather resistance and chemical resistance of the coating can also be improved.

(3) Lawn fabrics and fibers field. Lawn fabrics or other fiber materials used outdoors are easily affected by natural light and ultraviolet rays; therefore, adding HALS can not only improve their service life, but also increase their UV resistance.

In summary, as a preservative with great application value, hindered amine light stabilizers can not only help materials maintain their original appearance and performance, but also improve their service life and reduce the risk of damage.
