Classification of Benzophenone UV Absorbers (UV-531)
With the damage to the natural environment by humans and the use of chemicals, the harm of ultraviolet light has attracted increasing attention. Benzophenone UV absorbers are a commonly used type of UV protection agent, featuring good stability and a broad absorption spectrum. According to their different absorption wavelengths, they can be divided into three categories: those absorbing shorter wavelengths, those absorbing longer wavelengths, and those absorbing mixed wavelengths.
Ultraviolet light is divided into UVA, UVB, and UVC. Among them, UVB is the shorter-wavelength UV that easily causes sunburn, while UVA penetrates deep into the skin, damages skin cells, accelerates skin aging, and can even lead to skin cancer. Therefore, UV absorbers play a crucial role in protecting against UV.
Benzophenone UV absorbers mainly protect the skin by absorbing UV and converting its energy into heat, preventing UV from reaching the skin.
In addition to sun protection, benzophenone UV absorbers are also widely used in plastics, rubber, coatings, and other materials, providing antioxidant, anti-aging, and stability-enhancing effects.
Although benzophenone UV absorbers have excellent protective effects, they also present some safety concerns. For example, using cosmetics or daily necessities containing such absorbers in sunlight may cause photosensitive reactions, leading to skin itching, redness, and other discomforts. Therefore, when choosing daily products, attention should be paid to whether they contain such ingredients, to avoid adverse consequences.
The category absorbing shorter wavelengths, such as benzophenone and dibenzophenone, mainly absorbs below 280nm and is suitable for UVB-band protection. This category of compounds has many advantages, such as good light stability, high molecular symmetry, and good chemical stability. However, its defects are also obvious, such as a narrow absorption spectrum and insufficient absorption peaks.
The category absorbing longer wavelengths, such as certain benzophenone derivatives and isophthalic benzophenones, mainly absorbs above 320nm and is suitable for UVA-band protection. The advantage of this category is a relatively broad absorption spectrum that can block both UVA and UVB, improving sun protection; but the disadvantages are susceptibility to thermal degradation and poor photo-generation properties.
The category absorbing mixed wavelengths, such as phenyl oxazole and tetraphenylmethane-based oxazole, covers both UVB and UVA bands. The advantage of this category is that it provides full-band protection, but the absorption efficiency is relatively low and it needs to be mixed with other compounds.
Overall, each type of benzophenone UV absorber has its own advantages and disadvantages and should be selected according to specific usage needs. At the same time, the safe use of chemicals is also very important and must be strictly in accordance with regulations to avoid harm to the environment and human body.
