Mechanism and Classification of Light Stabilizers

Tiangang Auxiliary is an enterprise dedicated to the research of new materials and their applications, focusing mainly on light stabilizer research. As an important additive, light stabilizers have been widely used in various materials such as plastics, rubber, coatings, and fibers. With Tiangang Auxiliary as the main subject, this article introduces the mechanism and classification of light stabilizers.Mechanism and Classification of Light Stabilizers 配图

A light stabilizer is an additive that protects organic materials from light damage; it can absorb, disperse, and transfer harmful UV radiation, thereby effectively countering adverse factors such as oxidation, aging, and degradation, and extending the material's service life. The mechanism of light stabilizers is mainly achieved through two mechanisms: one is the light-absorption mechanism, where the light stabilizer absorbs ultraviolet light and converts UV energy into heat, thereby reducing the impact of UV radiation on organic materials; the other is the free-radical trapping mechanism, where the light stabilizer can combine with free radicals, thereby slowing the free-radical reaction and protecting organic materials from oxidative and aging effects.

According to different mechanisms and structural characteristics, light stabilizers can be divided into several different types. Among the most common types of light stabilizers are: absorptive light stabilizers, trapping light stabilizers, and chelating light stabilizers.

1. Absorptive Light Stabilizers

Absorptive light stabilizers mainly protect organic materials from UV damage by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into heat. The structure of absorptive light stabilizers generally consists of two main parts: the absorbing group and the stabilizing group. The absorbing group refers to the aromatic compound in the light stabilizer, which can absorb UV radiation in the 200–400 nm wavelength range. The stabilizing group refers to the non-aromatic compound in the light stabilizer, which can receive the UV energy absorbed by the absorbing group and convert it into heat, thereby avoiding the aging and degradation of organic materials.

2. Trapping Light Stabilizers

Trapping light stabilizers mainly protect materials by adsorbing free radicals and avoiding oxidation and aging caused by free-radical reactions. The main structural feature of trapping light stabilizers is that they contain multiple electrophilic functional groups, which can combine with free radicals to form stable compounds, thereby reducing free-radical reactions. Unlike absorptive light stabilizers, the main role of trapping light stabilizers is to delay or avoid the aging and degradation of organic materials when they are affected by ultraviolet light and other harmful environmental factors.

3. Chelating Light Stabilizers

The main role of chelating light stabilizers is to reduce the impact of harmful metal ions on organic materials by binding with them. The structural feature of chelating light stabilizers is that they contain multiple complexing groups or affinity functional groups with nitrogen-containing heterocycles, which can undergo coordination reactions with metal ions to form stable complexes, thereby reducing the activity of metal ions and decreasing damage to organic materials.

In summary, as an important additive, light stabilizers can extend the service life of organic materials and improve their reliability and stability. According to different mechanisms and structural characteristics, light stabilizers can be divided into various types, including absorptive light stabilizers, trapping light stabilizers, and chelating light stabilizers. Tiangang Auxiliary will continue to devote itself to the research and application of light stabilizers, providing better-quality products and services to consumers worldwide.
