Application of UV Absorbers in PVC

I. Role of UV Absorbers in PVC
Inhibit photo-degradation: Absorbs UV-B (280–320 nm) and part of UV-A (320–400 nm), reduces free-radical formation, and delays PVC molecular-chain scission. Prevent yellowing: Blocks UV-triggered oxidation reactions, avoiding decomposition and discoloration of plasticizers, stabilizers and other components in PVC.

Maintain mechanical properties: Reduces UV-induced embrittlement and surface chalking, maintaining PVC's flexibility and strength.

II. Types of UV Absorbers Suitable for PVC
1. Benzotriazole class
Representative products: Tinuvin 327, UV-P, UV-326.

Characteristics: Efficiently absorbs UV-A/UV-B, high temperature resistance (suitable for PVC processing temperature of 160–200 °C). Good compatibility with PVC, low migration.

Application scenarios: Outdoor building materials (door/window profiles, pipes), advertising films, automotive interiors.

2. Benzophenone class
Representative products: UV-531 (BP-3), UV-9.

Characteristics: Broad-spectrum absorption, but relatively poor migration resistance (requires combination with stabilizers). Lower cost, suitable for mid-to-low-end PVC products.

Application scenarios: Agricultural films, temporary awnings, packaging materials.

3. Triazine class
Representative products: Tinuvin 1577, UV-1164.

Characteristics: Extremely strong UV absorption, high temperature resistance and long-term light stability. Higher price, mostly used in high-performance PVC products.

Application scenarios: High-end outdoor building materials, automotive exterior parts.

4. Inorganic UV shielding agents
Representative products: Nano titanium dioxide (TiO2), nano zinc oxide (ZnO).

Characteristics: Physical protection through reflection/scattering of UV radiation, high safety. Requires uniform dispersion (particle size <100 nm), otherwise it affects PVC transparency.

Application scenarios: Transparent PVC films, outer layer of food packaging.

III. Typical Application Scenarios and Formulation Examples
1. PVC Door/Window Profiles
Formulation: Benzotriazole class (Tinuvin 327, 0.3–0.5%) + hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS, e.g. Tinuvin 770, 0.2%) + calcium-zinc heat stabilizer.

Effect: Anti-yellowing service life extended to more than 10 years, compliant with GB/T 8814-2017 standard.

2. PVC Outdoor Advertising Film
Formulation: Benzophenone class (UV-531, 0.5%) + antioxidant (e.g. Irganox 1010, 0.1%) + plasticizer (DOP).

Effect: Weatherability improved 3–5 times, reducing fading and cracking.

3. Transparent PVC Flexible Film (Food Packaging)
Formulation: Nano TiO2 (1–2%) + epoxidized soybean oil (plasticizer) + organotin stabilizer.

Effect: Compliant with FDA 21 CFR standard, UV blocking rate >90%.

IV. Key Precautions
Synergistic effect: UV absorbers need to be compounded with heat stabilizers (such as lead salts, calcium-zinc), antioxidants (such as phenolics) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) to form a synergistic protection system.

Processing temperature: PVC processing temperature is relatively high (160–200 °C); UV absorbers with high temperature resistance (such as the benzotriazole class) must be selected.

Migration and blooming: Avoid excessive addition of benzophenone class (prone to migration), especially in plasticized PVC where the dosage must be controlled.

Environmental regulations: Food-contact PVC must comply with standards such as EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR, which restrict the migration level of specific UV absorbers.

V. Emerging Technology Trends
Nano-material compounding: Nano TiO2/ZnO combined with organic UV absorbers, combining the advantages of physical shielding and chemical absorption.

Bio-based plasticizer-compatible systems: Develop UV stabilization solutions compatible with environmentally friendly plasticizers (such as citrates).

Smart-responsive PVC: UV absorbers combined with photochromic dyes, used in smart packaging (e.g. UV intensity indicator labels).
